Perfectionism & Burnout Therapy in Chicago, IL
Being excellent was supposed to feel good. So why does it feel like you're barely keeping it together?
"You have to be twice as good to get half as much."
If you are a Black woman or a person of color navigating corporate, academic, or high-achieving spaces in Chicago, you didn’t just hear this phrase growing up—you internalized it. You learned early on that society rarely allows you to just be "good enough." To secure your seat at the table, protect your peace, or earn basic respect, you felt you had to perform above and beyond.
On the outside, you look like the ultimate success story. You have the titles, the degrees, and the reputation of being the one who always "handles things." But on the inside, the goalposts keep moving. What started as ambition has morphed into a relentless, exhausting perfectionism. Your body may be starting to show signs that this isn't sustainable.
If you are secretly asking yourself, “Why is everything so hard right now?”, You may be burnt out.
Signs of High-Functioning Burnout & Systemic Fatigue
Burnout isn’t just a bad week at the office; it is a deeper nervous response to sustained, chronic, and often unmanageable stress. This could be from the culture at your job or the demands placed on you personally and professionally. In my practice supporting millennial professionals of color, burnout and perfectionism rarely look like giving up. Instead, they look like:
Constant Exhaustion: Feeling bone-tired no matter how many hours you sleep, or waking up at 3:00 AM with your heart racing.
The Relentless Mental Load: Sitting on the couch at the end of the day, completely drained, while your brain runs down a terrifyingly long laundry list of tasks.
Hyper-Independence: Pushing through stress because you feel like you aren't allowed to drop the ball, ask for help, or show any vulnerability.
Somatic Symptoms: The chronic headaches, the tight shoulders, the GI issues, and the physical tension your body uses as a distress signal.
Emotional Disconnection: Dreading responsibilities you used to enjoy, feeling detached, or doom-scrolling for an hour just to numb the noise.
A Gentle Reality Check: Sometimes, what feels like an internal mental health struggle is actually a reasonable body response to unreasonable circumstances. Pushing for excellence in spaces where you are "the only" or "one of few" breeds isolation and physical strain. Before we try to "fix" you, let’s first acknowledge that you are carrying a load that does not need to be carried alone.
How We Untangle Perfectionism & Recover from Burnout
In therapy, we aren’t just looking for quick-fix productivity hacks or generic self-care tips. We are doing the deeper, radical work of helping you live sustainably inside your own life.
Using a trauma-informed, culturally responsive framework, our work together focuses on:
Listening to the Body's Check Engine Lights:Calming the Nervous System.
We will slow down and get curious about your physical symptoms. Instead of overriding the headaches or pushing through the exhaustion, we learn to decipher what your body is actually asking for—whether it's five minutes without a phone, a sensory break, or simple rest.
Naming What Is Actually Yours to Carry: Boundary Auditing.
We will take an honest stock of your plate—the corporate demands, the family expectations, the friend groups, and the structural pressures. We will explicitly separate the responsibilities you consciously chose from the ones handed to you simply because you’re "the strong one."
Practicing the 'Small No': Tactical Action.
Your nervous system needs real-world proof that saying no is a safe, valid option. We will practice setting small, low-stakes boundaries ("I can't take that on this week" or "Let me get back to you"), navigating the initial discomfort until it becomes secondary nature.
Finding What is Just Yours: Reclaiming the Self.
We will create space for you to connect with things that bring you back to yourself. My goal is to help you create activities and rituals for yourself that are completely detached from monetization, usefulness, or caretaking. We build a life where your soul can slouch, remembering that you exist outside of your utility to other people.
You Don't Have to Hold It All Together Alone
Rest is not a luxury you have to earn after you finish an endless to-do list; rest is a radical, necessary form of care. If you are a high-achieving millennial woman in Illinois (or across 40+ PSYPACT states) who is ready to put down the superhero cape and extend the same grace to yourself that you give to everyone else, I am here to walk with you.
